AI Apprenticeship Units

AI is moving fast and for many organisations, the challenge isn't identifying where it could add value, it's building the leadership capability to act on it.

Apprenticeship Units are a new type of short-form training designed specifically for that purpose. Funded through the Growth and Skills Levy, they give employers a flexible, cost-effective way to upskill existing staff in targeted areas without the commitment of a full apprenticeship programme.

Each AI unit runs for 30 hours and is built from the same high-quality, employer-led occupational standards that underpin full apprenticeships.

AI Strategy and Opportunity

This unit is designed for leaders who are responsible for setting the direction of AI within their organisation, particularly those at an early stage of exploring what AI could mean for their business.
Participants build the knowledge and confidence to evaluate where AI can genuinely add value, develop a credible business case and communicate a clear AI strategy to a range of stakeholders, including those with no technical background.
The programme covers the capabilities and limitations of different AI models, how to assess risk and viability and how to stay ahead of an evolving technology landscape. The goal is for leaders to leave with a sharper, more informed perspective on AI and the practical tools to act on it.
Duration: 30 hours.

AI Adoption, Procurement and Governance

Once an organisation knows where AI fits, the harder questions begin. Which solutions should you buy? How do you procure them responsibly? And how do you put the right governance in place to keep AI use ethical, compliant and accountable?
This unit is for leaders involved in evaluating AI products and suppliers, building business cases, and establishing the frameworks that give their organisation confidence in the decisions being made.
Participants work through structured approaches to vendor evaluation and benchmarking, risk assessment (including vendor lock-in, data and IP considerations) and the design of governance structures with clear roles, responsibilities and escalation routes. The unit also covers the legal and regulatory landscape around AI and how to embed meaningful human oversight from the outset.

AI Delivery and Organisational Transformation

Implementing AI is as much an organisational challenge as a technical one. This unit is for leaders who are overseeing live AI programmes and need to manage the human side of transformation alongside the operational detail.
Participants develop the skills to lead AI-enabled change in a way that is sustainable and aligned to long-term business objectives, including how to assess workforce impacts, support reskilling and handle the realities of role redesign and potential job displacement.
The unit also covers risk management, audit and compliance and how to monitor deployed AI systems for issues like bias, drift and security vulnerabilities. Equally important is communication - participants practise translating complex AI risks and opportunities into clear, accessible language for internal teams, external partners and regulators alike.
