Learner Case Study: Zahra Shehabi

Turning Sustainability Theory into NHS Action

Meet Zahra Shehabi, a healthcare professional who joined the LDN Sustainable Healthcare Academy to strengthen her sustainability knowledge and influence change within the NHS. The programme has helped her develop leadership skills and confidence to take on projects that make healthcare greener; work that’s already shaping her organisation’s approach to sustainability.

Why did you apply to be part of the Academy?

“I applied to be part of the LDN Sustainable Healthcare Academy because it felt like a great opportunity to gain a recognised qualification in sustainability, particularly as it was fully funded by our NHS organisation. I saw it as a way to broaden my horizons beyond my clinical work, to network with like-minded professionals, develop new skills, and open up opportunities to contribute to sustainability on a wider scale.”

Tell us about some of the projects that you have worked on through the programme?

“Throughout the programme, I’ve been involved in several sustainability-focused initiatives. I ran student pilot sessions on teaching sustainability, which helped embed sustainable principles into education. I also contributed to national presentations on sustainability and participated in the procurement process for reusable gowns, an eye-opening experience that gave me an understanding of sustainable procurement. Most recently, I’ve begun to look at a larger project exploring sustainability practices within our dental hospitals, looking at ways to make the dental clinic more environmentally responsible.”

How has this programme supported you with the above projects?

“The programme has given me valuable tools and frameworks, not only in sustainability but also in management and leadership. I’ve learned how to plan and deliver projects effectively, manage stakeholders and also communicate impact clearly. The project management principles taught have been particularly transferable, helping me structure and lead my work more strategically.”

What impact has this had on your trust?

“By the end of my main project, I hope the work will contribute meaningfully to our organisation’s Green Plan. I’ve started thinking of the metrics to support this, including carbon calculations and evaluating the project through a triple bottom line approach (environmental, social and financial impact). The work will help me raise awareness within the hospital about how sustainability can be integrated into everyday clinical and operational decisions.”

How is your learning experience with LDN?

“It’s been a steep learning curve. Coming from a scientific and academic background, I initially found the reflective and management-oriented style quite different, but I quickly adapted. The online modules and resources have been excellent: practical, engaging, and highly relevant. The coaching and mentoring element has been the standout for me. My coach, Charmaine, was superb; incredibly supportive, motivating and insightful. Honestly, without her guidance, I’m not sure I would have made it through the programme. I now see the real value of coaching and believe every learning programme should include it; it provides structure, reflection and confidence that make all the difference.”

Can you describe the programme in 3 words?

“Resourceful, supportive and connecting”
