Building sustainable supply chains

Why This Elective Matters’

Supply chains are where much of an organisation’s environmental and social impact occurs - yet they are also where sustainability risks are often least visible and hardest to manage. Regulatory requirements and stakeholder expectations are increasing pressure on organisations to understand and improve supply chain sustainability. This elective equips learners with the knowledge and practical tools to do exactly that.

  • Learners explore the structure of supply chains and how sustainability considerations apply across sourcing, production, distribution and end-of-life. The elective introduces supply chain mapping as a foundational practice, covering scope definition, data collection and impact identification. Key upstream considerations include ethical sourcing, environmental impacts of materials, supplier collaboration, logistics emissions and transparency. Downstream impacts are explored through transportation, product use, packaging and disposal. The role of technology-enabled solutions (including AI, blockchain and IoT) is introduced, alongside risks linked to human rights, geopolitical pressures and regulation.

  • Learners reflect on how sustainability impacts show up across their own organisational supply chain, examining where risks, inefficiencies and leverage points exist. Practical examples support understanding of how organisations embed sustainability into procurement and operations.

  • Learners will gain confidence in mapping, analysing and improving supply chain sustainability. They will understand how responsible sourcing supports compliance, reduces risk and strengthens long-term organisational performance.

  • This elective is valuable for learners involved in procurement, supply chain management, operations, logistics or sustainability roles.
