Embedding sustainability into organisational capability

Why This Elective Matters’

Sustainability strategies only succeed when organisations have the capability to deliver them. Too often, sustainability is treated as a standalone training topic rather than something embedded into how people learn, develop and perform their roles. This elective helps learners understand how capability-building enables ESG transformation by making sustainability thinking part of everyday practice, decision-making and professional development.

  • Learners explore what sustainability capability-building means in practice, including the long-term development of knowledge, skills, mindsets and organisational conditions. The elective examines why capability is critical to transformation, showing how gaps in skills, confidence or role relevance can undermine even the most ambitious strategies.

Learners also explore common barriers to capability-building, such as time pressure, generic training, siloed functions, limited psychological safety and weak leadership modelling. Opportunities for embedding sustainability into capability-building are examined, including blended learning approaches, communities of practice and integration into existing learning pathways.

  • Learners reflect on how sustainability capability is currently developed within their organisation. Practical examples support understanding of how learning ecosystems can be redesigned to improve relevance, accessibility and application. Learners develop a revised learning programme that strengthens sustainability capability, aligning objectives, content and delivery methods with organisational constraints and ESG priorities.

  • Learners will gain confidence in evaluating and shaping capability-building approaches that support consistent sustainability action. They will understand how embedding sustainability into learning strengthens resilience, innovation, culture and long-term performance.

  • This elective is valuable for learners involved in learning and development, transformation, leadership or sustainability roles, and for anyone seeking to embed sustainability into organisational capability rather than isolated initiatives.
