Employee and human rights
Why This Elective Matters’
Respect for employee and human rights is a cornerstone of social sustainability and responsible business. Organisations are increasingly expected to show how they protect rights, prevent harm and uphold fair treatment across their workplaces and wider value chains. This elective helps learners understand human rights as a practical organisational responsibility - not just a policy statement - and builds confidence to engage with real workplace issues.
-
Learners explore the rights and responsibilities of individuals in life and employment, and how these connect to organisational culture, governance and ESG commitments. The elective examines how human rights considerations show up in areas such as fair working conditions, equality, dignity, wellbeing and safe work environments. It also explores how organisations approach socially responsible HR management and how commitments translate into standards, processes and accountability.
-
Learners consider realistic workplace scenarios and assess how organisational practices align with stated values and ESG commitments. Practical examples support learners to identify risks, gaps and improvement opportunities - including where policies exist but are not consistently applied, or where responsibilities are unclear across teams, suppliers or contractors.
-
By the end of the elective, learners will be better equipped to recognise human-rights-related risks, understand what good practice looks like, and contribute to fairer, more responsible organisational approaches. They will gain confidence to ask informed questions, support ethical decision-making and strengthen alignment between organisational commitments and lived practice.
-
This elective is particularly relevant for learners in HR, procurement, supply chain, governance, operations and people management roles, and for anyone with responsibility for standards, culture or compliance.
