Engaging employees in a sustainability culture

Why This Elective Matters’

A strong sustainability culture is critical to long-term business success. Organisations may have ambitious sustainability strategies, but without genuine employee engagement these often remain disconnected initiatives rather than everyday practice. This elective helps learners understand what a sustainability culture looks like in action and how organisations move beyond token gestures to embed sustainability into daily decisions, behaviours and values.

  • Learners explore what is meant by sustainability culture, including how Environmental, Social and Governance considerations are integrated across systems, functions and ways of working. The elective examines how organisational culture shapes sustainability outcomes through visible behaviours, decision-making patterns and alignment between stated values and lived practice.

Learners also explore common challenges in engaging employees, such as scepticism, initiative fatigue, competing priorities and concerns about greenwashing. The role of regulatory foundations is introduced, showing how inclusion, psychological safety, fairness and wellbeing are supported through established legal frameworks.

  • Learners reflect on how sustainability culture shows up in their own organisation and where misalignment may exist. Practical examples support understanding of how organisations overcome engagement challenges and build commitment through clear goals, authentic communication, skills development and employee empowerment. Learners consider proportionate, realistic approaches for gaining buy-in, balancing top-down leadership with bottom-up ownership and maintaining momentum over time.

  • Learners will gain confidence in supporting and influencing a culture of sustainability. They will understand how meaningful employee involvement improves wellbeing, innovation, retention and delivery of sustainability goals, strengthening organisational resilience and performance.

  • This elective is valuable for learners at all levels, particularly those involved in people management, leadership, change initiatives or sustainability delivery.
