Mastering carbon management
Why This Elective Matters’
Carbon emissions are at the heart of the global sustainability challenge and increasingly central to regulatory, financial and reputational pressures. As disclosure requirements expand and net zero expectations grow, organisations need practical capability to understand, measure and manage emissions.
-
Learners explore the fundamentals of carbon emissions, including the main greenhouse gases, the GHG Protocol’s emission scopes and the importance of Scope 3 emissions across value chains. The carbon management hierarchy is introduced, prioritising avoidance, reduction, substitution and then offsetting. Upstream and downstream emissions are examined in detail, covering supply chains, transport, product use and end-of-life impacts. Learners explore carbon accounting approaches (activity-based, spend-based and hybrid) and key UK regulatory frameworks such as SECR, ESOS and emerging sustainability reporting standards. The role and limitations of carbon offsetting are also considered.
-
Learners reflect on how carbon management applies within their own organisation, identifying where emissions arise and where reduction opportunities are most material. Practical examples support understanding of how organisations apply structured carbon management approaches.
-
Learners will gain confidence in explaining and applying carbon management concepts. They will understand how effective carbon management supports compliance, reduces risk and strengthens organisational resilience.
-
This elective is valuable for learners involved in operations, procurement, finance, sustainability, supply chain or reporting roles.
