Public health
Why This Elective Matters’
Public health and sustainability are deeply interconnected. Environmental conditions, social structures and economic systems all shape population health, with direct consequences for organisations, communities and economies. This elective helps learners understand why public health is a sustainability issue - and how organisational decisions can either worsen inequalities or contribute to healthier, more resilient societies.
-
Learners explore what public health means in practice, focusing on prevention, wellbeing and population-level outcomes rather than individual clinical care. The elective examines how environmental, social and economic factors influence health, including housing, work, inequality, pollution and access to opportunity.
Learners also explore the drivers of health inequalities and why impacts are experienced differently across socio-economic groups and communities. The role of organisations is examined in depth, including how business practices, workplaces, products and supply chains shape health outcomes. Relevant frameworks and regulatory expectations that support health, safety and social value are introduced to provide practical context.
-
Learners reflect on how public health shows up within their organisational and community context. Practical examples support understanding of upstream causes and downstream impacts, and how workplace practices, environmental management and community engagement influence wellbeing. Learners consider realistic, sustainable actions organisations can take to improve public health outcomes, using proportionate, systems-based approaches.
-
Learners will gain confidence in linking public health to sustainability strategy and organisational decision-making. They will understand how sustainable practices can reduce harm, improve wellbeing and strengthen long-term resilience for both organisations and society.
-
This elective is valuable for learners across all sectors, particularly those involved in people management, operations, procurement, facilities, community engagement or sustainability roles.
