Sustainability communication and storytelling

Why This Elective Matters’

As sustainability expectations rise, organisations are increasingly judged not only on what they do, but on how clearly, credibly and honestly they communicate it. Poor communication can undermine trust, invite scepticism or expose organisations to accusations of greenwashing. This elective helps learners translate complex sustainability issues into accessible, compelling messages that engage stakeholders, meet regulatory expectations and support meaningful behaviour change.

  • Learners explore core concepts in sustainability communication and narrative design, including messaging, storytelling and audience segmentation. The elective examines how framing and story structure influence stakeholder perception and action, and why transparency, evidence and context are essential for credibility.

Learners also explore common risks arising from unclear or overstated communications, such as misalignment between words and actions, greenwashing and stakeholder distrust. The role of regulation is introduced to show how advertising, disclosure and reporting standards shape what organisations can claim and how claims must be substantiated.

  • Learners analyse how sustainability communications land with different audiences, including investors, employees, customers, regulators and communities. Practical examples support understanding of how narrative choices, evidence and tone affect engagement and trust. Learners design an audience-specific sustainability communications plan that balances aspiration with evidence, aligns with organisational strategy and complies with regulatory requirements.

  • Learners will gain confidence in using storytelling responsibly to support sustainability goals. They will understand how effective communication builds trust, strengthens engagement and reduces reputational risk, while supporting longer-term cultural and behavioural change.

  • This elective is valuable for learners involved in communications, reporting, engagement, sustainability or change roles, and for anyone responsible for explaining sustainability decisions to diverse audiences.
