Sustainability leadership

Why This Elective Matters’

Sustainability leadership is no longer a specialist concern. Leaders are expected to make decisions under uncertainty, interpret ESG information with judgement, prioritise what is genuinely material, and communicate clearly to boards, employees and external stakeholders. Done well, sustainability leadership protects value, strengthens trust and builds long-term resilience. Done poorly, it creates cynicism, greenwash risk and strategic drift. This elective is designed for leaders who need practical, repeatable ways to turn ESG complexity into confident decisions, credible change and clear communication.

  • Learners explore four connected leadership capabilities:

    • Strategic evaluation: how to assess sustainability risks and opportunities using ESG data, including red flags for data quality and how to speak honestly about uncertainty.

    • Prioritisation: how to identify material issues and focus attention using a clear commercial logic (double materiality, value/risk, feasibility, narrative coherence).

    • Change leadership: how to drive cultural transformation using proven leadership theory (process, behaviours, sense-making and psychological safety).

    • Communication with authority: how to align science, metrics and purpose to build confidence and action across audiences.

  • This elective uses a distinctly applied approach. Learners diagnose poor leadership briefings, analyse the organisational impact of weak leadership tone and logic, and rewrite communications to model credible practice. They complete prioritisation exercises using a structured decision framework, practise a 90-second leadership address, and build a practical sustainability leadership playbook they can use immediately.

  • Learners will leave with a repeatable decision pipeline, practical tools for culture and change, and communication templates for board-level and workforce messaging. They will be better equipped to lead sustainability transformation with calm, evidence-led authority.

  • This elective is ideal for managers and leaders with strategic influence, change responsibilities or stakeholder-facing roles who need to lead sustainability with credibility and impact.
